Police checks for all nursing home staff

All nursing home staff will be required to undergo police checks from the start of next year.

Currently, only staff who have unsupervised access to residents need police checks.

But all staff would now be required to undergo such checks as early as January next year, Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot said.

The move would help to ensure nursing home residents receive quality care in a safe environment, she said.

"This is about protecting the most vulnerable members of our society the frail and aged," Ms Elliot said in a statement.

"This is about preventing people with serious criminal convictions working with frail and aged people."
