Brighton Aged Care home breached basic standards, agency finds

AN Adelaide nursing home has breached almost half of the basic standards of care, the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency has found.

The deadline for a decision on the future of Brighton Aged Care passed yesterday, with the 71-bed facility failing to comply with 17 of 44 accreditation standards.

The centre's accreditation was to expire in December but it has now been brought forward to November 7. It will now undergo a special audit in October in order to reapply for accreditation.

If it fails, the centre will be forced to shut. Of the 17 standards breached, 14 were identified in an audit earlier this month.

They included ensuring residents had adequate nourishment and hydration and were free from pain.

After discovering a further three areas of concern at the weekend - staffing, health and personal care, and physical environment and safety systems - the facility has been found formally non-compliant. Two additional areas - clinical care and oral/dental care - are also being monitored, with the nursing home given five days to respond.

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot said: "We make no apologies for the tough action that is being taken ... in relation to this or any other home where potential problems with care are identified."

A spokesman for Brighton Aged Care has previously stated the centre is working with the agency to rectify areas of non-compliance.

Brighton Aged Care, which is owned by Aged Care Services, was first audited on August 1.
