New action over Brighton aged care centre

AN Adelaide aged-care home under federal investigation has been subject to further action, with health officials concerned on a rise in the number of residents suffering falls at the facility.

An audit of Brighton Aged Care on August 1 led the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency to raise concerns about potential neglect.

The centre was found to be potentially failing 14 of 44 basic standards, such as ensuring residents had adequate nourishment and hydration, were pain free and had a right to privacy and dignity.

A senior federal nursing officer conducting daily inspections of the facility has since raised new concerns about an increase in the reported number of falls by residents.

As a result, the 71-bed, high-care facility was issued an official notice of non-compliance on Friday.

The centre has a new set of deadlines which include immediate action to address falls management and 14 days to fix issues such as appropriate equipment and assessments.

A decision on the facility's future will be made on August 25.

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot said Australians in aged care deserved good care and any failing would be addressed. "We make no apologies for the tough action that is being taken in relation to this or any other home where potential problems with care are identified," she said.

A spokesman for Brighton Aged Care said the centre had responded formally to the agency and the centre was working in the department's timetable to implement improvements.

"Brighton is working hard to ensure all residents are receiving the best possible quality of care," he said.

Brighton Aged Care encountered sanctions under its previous owners, Jagdish and Madhu Saraf, who were prevented from operating aged-care homes after repeatedly breaching regulations.

Ownership was transferred to Aged Care Services on March 1.

Aged Care Services also runs Kirralee Residential Aged Care Facility in Ballarat, which is facing criminal charges over malnourished residents.
