Book reviews
'The Unexpected Elements of Love' by Kate Legge

There are very few literary novels where issues relating to ageing are explored. And not many where one of the key protagonists is a woman of 74 who gradually realises that her life partner is moving into dementia.  Kate Legge's novel, 'The Unexpected Elements of Love', explores this issue along with many other contemporary ones. These include euthanasia, the pressures on working mothers, the difficulties of coping with overactive children and much more. A background issue is climate change and the unpredictable nature of weather. It is so rare to find a novel where ageing and aged care are significant themes. Yet the book is ultimately optimistic - and, furthermore, a good read.

The Unexpected Elements of Love was published two years ago so there are quite a few reviews available.
