Miriam's Story

My darling mother has been in a W.A. Nursing Home for just over 1 year, and yes I do have concerns about the aged care system.

My mother suffers from alzheimers and unfortunately our family could no longer care for Mum at home as she now requires constant care.

Our concerns range from:

  • Increase in medication without family members being told
  • Lack of staff (which seems to be the major concern) -- especially in a dementia ward;
  • When havoc does occur, it should be supervised at all times;
  • Meals are very bland and often gone about very cheaply;

I could go on and on. I understand that there is a Nursing Homes complaint agency that we can go to, but it must be done formally and sometimes we just do not want to rock the boat, so to speak, and often wonder how it may reflect on Mum being there.

I understand I'm not the only person with concerns but would like to hear what other people have done in the same situation?
