"I am writing in regard to the terrible lack of care at a facility which eventually lead to the death of my mother. " Mum had been a patient at [nursing home] for only two and a half months. She had vascular demetia which she had for quite a number of years. She had been living in WA for the last 20 years or so and had been given very good support which allowed her to stay at home until placement was required and I was able to bring mum back to [capital city] to be near myself and my wife. I had her named placed at 2 facilities which were suitiible as she needed secure placement. The 1st facility had her name for over 4 years and [nursing home name supressed] was 18 months. On monday Mum was showing the signs of being unstable on her feet by one of the nurses on duty which was reported to the senior nursing manager. This nurse also put an alarm sensor pad on mums bed in case she woke during the night before leaving for the day. [One evening later], I was called by the senior nurse on duty to say that mum had a fall in her room and was found on the floor in a pool of vomit. I said should I come down now to see what i can do and i was told that NO it was ok and that she was brought out to the nurses station and that they would keep an eye on her. I said to the nurse in charge to call me if there were any changes at all during the night and he said yes he would do that. The next morning at about 9.00am, I was called by the new nursing unit manager and told that they were really concerned about my mums vital signs and that they were sending her to the nearest hospital emergency room at [hospital location] which is only 4 minutes from where we live .So I got in my car and was there when she arrived. She was unconcious and had vomit on her nighty and her incontance pad was full. A young intern came out and asked me what had happened. All i could tell him is that she had had a fall and i believed she had hit her head. They raced mum into a room to have her head scanned and was found that she had a massive brain Heamorage. The prognosis was bad and I was asked would I agree if there was a hospital anywhere that would operate and I said of coarse as there really was no other option. Thankfully, the [hospital name] in [suburb] were available and operated that day to releve the pressure. They were wonderful but unfortunately mum did not regain concsiousness and died [later that week] after a long struggle. I asked to have a Route Cause Analysis done at [nursing home] which was done and I was told at a meeting with [several] Managers that after the reveiw that the finding was that the nurses thought that "Mum had a cold as there was something going around!!" - which was a total fabrication and this was verified by [nurse's name supressed], the nurse who had observed Mum. [Nurses name supressed] came to see us after mum had died very distressed as she new what had happened and all the staff at the hospital were told that my mothers name was not to be mentioned by the Manager of the hospital [Manager's name supressed]. Since this report I have had a complaint logged with the Health Care Complaints Commisson in [capital city] for the last year and this seems to be going No Where Fast. It is all to hard and I keep calling every couple of weeks to find out what is happening.
Just another loss of life - who cares? She was neglected and deserved a lot better care. Kind regards Newer articles:
