Just like any other contract, the "buyer beware" principle applies to retirement village living. Vulnerable residentsBecause of their age and because they often enter a village after a period of crisis in their lives, the residents are more vulnerable than other citizens. In most cases they are required to sign a complex contract which many have difficulty in understanding. There has been considerable concern about the nature of these contracts and the financial exploitation which has resulted. There have been court cases and attempts to legislate to protect citizens.
